1. Start prepping your skin three months ahead

Think of taking care of your skin like trying to lose weight - results won’t happen overnight! Sis, please don’t wait until the last minute to start a skincare regimen! An ideal time to start prepping is at least three months before your big day – understand your skin, know what works for you and what doesn’t, and follow a regimen where you can be consistent!

2. Facials are a girl’s best friend

This skin thing is serious o; you’re dealing with whiteheads, blackheads, hyperpigmentation, etc. There is only so much your serums and scrubs can do. If within budget, visit a professional for deep-cleansing facials in the few months before your wedding! Don’t be afraid to dabble into at-home facials using items you already have. Do you see that turmeric in your spice cabinet? Combine it with honey and yoghurt, and you have a purifying and cleansing face mask.

3. Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!

We exfoliate to get rid of dead skin cells, dirt, and debris and reduce discolouration. We’ll need a whole article to discuss the different types of exfoliation, but please do your research and pick an exfoliant that works for your skin type. Remain consistent to get glowing skin and a much better skin texture. As with every good thing in life, enjoy it in small doses! Over-exfoliation is real, so avoid it at all costs.

4. Moisturise day and night

Your skincare routine is incomplete without moisturising. Hydrated skin is the best – that dry, harmattan skin look is not cute! Moisturising has many benefits, from protecting your skin from harsh climate, fighting blemishes, and keeping your skin looking young!

Using the right moisturiser is very important - choose one that works for your skin type (dry, oily, normal, etc.) and skin concern (textured skin, acne, etc.).

5. Eat your way to good skin

Drinking enough water and eating nutritious food is key to getting beautiful skin! This reminds us of the saying, “you are what you eat”. A balanced diet will ensure you are getting the right nutrients and that your skin is looking great ahead of your big day. Let’s not lie to each other - we know the Nigerian way of cooking, aka plenty plenty oil, might make this a bit tricky. But, we think you can find ways to incorporate healthy eating habits, e.g. more fruits, vegetables, and a watchful eye on your oil intake!

6. Lather that sunscreen

Anyone that says Nigerians do not need sunscreen needs a warning! With this harsh Naija sun, you NEED a good sunscreen product to fight away dangerous UV rays that can cause discolouration and wrinkles. Incorporate sunscreen into your daily routine, applying it after your moisturiser and reapplying during the day to get the maximum benefit! As with any other skincare product, choose the right product for your skin type!

We hope these tips help get your skin to be the best for your special day. But, if this is all new for you, take it easy and remember that small but consistent steps are all you need sometimes!
